The HSBC Waratahs celebrated Phil Waugh's record-breaking game by rewriting the history books in a 73-12 victory over the Lions at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Skins Man of the Match Drew Mitchell scored four of the team's eleven tries to notch just one of a host of milestones achieved on the night:

  • Wycliff Palu 50 NSW Points
  • Drew Mitchell 100 Super Rugby Points (with first try)

The HSBC Waratahs scored early in the first half with Mitchell crossing after a quick tap in only the sixth minute. However the 2010 recruit went from hero to villain minutes later when he lost control of the ball in his own in-goal allowing Lions speedster Tonderai Chavhanga to dive on the loose ball.

The points kept flowing when Dean Mumm took a slips catch off an attempted chip by Carlos Spencer and ran 40m to score.

Possession and territory swung back the visitors' way, and while they kept pressuring the line, the NSW defence held solid and provided the platform for three more first half tries.

Tom Carter and Lachie Turner were the beneficiaries of strong ball retention to score and secure a bonus point even before Mitchell was put through a gap in the dying stages for his second try, sending them to the sheds with a 33-5 lead.

The second forty started the way the first ended with both teams running the ball from their own half and looking to score tries. But it was a clever cross-field kick from Barnes to the wing which resulted in the sixth try, to unlikely recipient Wycliff Palu.

Mitchell then streaked away for his third and record-breaking fourth tries in the 58th and 63rd minute to give the Tahs a 52-5 lead.

The Lions didn't give up though and strung together a number of phases before replacement prop JC Janse van Rensburg crashed over for the Lions second try from short range.

Replacement scrumhalf Josh Holmes scored a double in the space of four minutes in the dying stages, before Turner put the icing on the cake after the siren had sounded with a turnover length of the field try.

The HSBC Waratahs now enjoy two days off for the first time this season before preparing for next Saturday's match against the Western Force in Perth.
